How to find the factory Keyless Entry Code - Ford Edge

The Ford Dealership wanted to charge us 50 bucks to program the keypad to my 2007 Edge, and because I'm cheap frugal I haven't had it done (in over 2 years). Luckily I haven't misplaced the one key I have to the car and haven't needed to use the keypad feature.

My mom sent me a youtube video of a guy who found the code on his Explorer through the left side rear compartment. It didn't work on the Edge but after some research I found several reports from other Edge owners who found the factory code on a white sticker on the fuse box. I looked there and here's what I found:
(I accidentally pushed a wrong number at the end and had to do it twice. Hence the delay.)

If you can't load the video here's how to get the code:
Under the steering column to the left (near the brake) there is a panel. Take the panel off and with a flashlight you will see a white sticker on the fuse box. The white sticker will have a 5 digit code. That is your factory keyless entry code.

Can you believe they were actually going to charge me $50 to do that? Unbelievable.

And to reprogram the code all you have to do it punch in the factory code, hold down the 1-2 button, then choose a new 5 digit code (this worked for me, let me know if it works for you as well).

  10. Thank you SO much for taking the time to publish this! You saved me $65.00 from our local Ford Dealership!! I can't even tell you how much I appreciate saving the money and also the time tomorrow at an appointment with the service department when the whole problem could be solved in 2 minutes in my own garage.

    1. Wow - $65! Your local dealership is really ripping people off! It's funny you mentioned the service department appointment. When I was told it would take "less than 5 minutes to retrieve the code" I knew there was something fishy going on. Especially since the service worker didn't actually say anything about electronically retrieving the code. Good for you to think about getting the code on your own!

  21. Thank you Amanda - this worked perfectly! The hard part was removing the fuse cover.

For Anonymous having trouble setting the new code, try this - it worked for me:
    1. Think of a new 5-digit code, such as 13702.
    2. Lock your car.
    3. Enter the factory code from your fuse box into the keypad. The door will unlock.
    4. Press the 1-2 button for a couple of seconds until the door locks and unlocks. This tells you that you can now program your new code. You have only a few seconds to enter the new code.
    5. Enter your new code, pressing just 5 buttons for the code.
    6. Wait a few seconds -or- press any button (this button will not be part of the code.)
    7. The door will lock and unlock, telling you that you completed programming of your new code.
    8. Lock your door.
    9. Try pressing the 5 buttons for your new code. If the door unlocks, then congratulations!!! If nothing happens, go back to step 2 and try again.

  22. Great, I am glad you found it and shared the info. Yet, I do not blame the dealerships at all for charging a fee for the number. If you are a professional paying for your profession through the roof, you simply do not give away your money, specially when you have to sustain an elefant store.

    1. I think it's despicable for the dealerships to charge $75+ to find the code. As a small business owner, I understand that we cannot give services away for free but it is terrible business practice to charge anything for such a simple task.

  26. Just a thought but maybe the dealer was thinking the code was changed and the factory code was not correct? Then they would have to reset via computer.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Update to what I just posted, seems the factory code stays with the vehicle. Even if you change to a new pin code. The original one still works. Isnt it great that previous owners of a vehicle can still get in if they know the original pin.

    1. That's correct. From what I understand even when you program a new code, you can always use the factory code to unlock the car.

    1. Perhaps another reader can help you out. I'm not sure why the factory code wouldn't work. The factory code can not be changed. Even when you program a new code, you can always use the factory code as well. Good luck!

  46. As others have said I too bought a used edge and the card was missing with the code. Called Ford customer service and the young lady told me the code was hidden in the car and a dealer could find it for me. So I went to Villa Ford and ask the lady service advisor to find the code. She told me it would take 1/2 hour and $50 bucks to get the code. I told her that Ford Customer Service told me it was hidden in the vehicle, her reply was well they did not tell us. So I just asked her how could I get out of here.
then did a google search that gave me your site. And it worked just great. Thank you so much for your posting and it looks like you have really cost a few ford dealer a lot of easy money. Keep up the good work.l

As an update for others, I recently took my Edge in to the Ford Dealership for a wheel problem and while I was waiting a couple came in and asked if a mechanic could retrieve the code. The salesman said it would take about 45 minutes and $55.00. I stepped in and asked what the procedure was to get the code and the salesman said he had no idea. I took the couple outside and showed them their code and they were thrilled. The salesman, not so much. He said he was embarrassed for not knowing that the code was on the car and figured it would need to be electronically programmed. Now he knows!

  65. The service writers work on commission so they make money off anything they can sell you. While having another issue worked on at the dealer today, I asked the service writer how to get the code and she told me they would have to hook it up to their computer and it would be about $25 dollars. I said not to worry about it and I came home and Googled it and found this site. Too bad the dealers are so greedy. Since it only takes about a minute, you think they would do it for you just for good customer relations. Thank you very much Amanda you made my day!

I have another suggestion to make this even simpler - I used a flashlight & mirror. This way I didn't have to remove the plastic panel covering the fuse box area. This also made it easier for those of us that may be less limber & agile as it didn't require as much body contortions & bending!!
Hope my tip helps pay it forward to others using your site

  69. Just got a quote from 2 different Ford Dealerships at $50 to put my 2013 Edge on a scanner to find out the security keypad code (which the previous owners couldn't remember). They said it would take a half hour. After reading this forum, I went out and there was the number, right under the plastic outer fuse cover! Changed it to my own code FOR FREE in 30 SECONDS. Thanks for the advice people! You made one old lady happy today!

  70. I think I deserve an award! I found the code in under 1 minute and at night with barely any lighting. Its that easy!! By the way....it works on a 2014 Edge.
Its not just the $50 savings, think about the gas and time spent to go to the dealer and then having to to wait at the dealer while they try to pressure sell you on servicing you don't need or worse to buy a new car. Believe me the less time spent at the dealership the more money you keep in your wallet, not to mention sparing yourself from the stress. Kudos for revealing this information. It looks like collectively you have saved people thousands of dollars!!!

I got to say that you were spot on. The Ford dealer was going to charge me over $300 for a new key.
I found it on-line for $28.20.(free shipping). They had to program the new key because I only had one.
(you need 2 keys to be able to do it yourself) Still only cost $68.50 for labor. I went to the service desk at CarMax and got the code for the door. These guys were great and very helpful. I opened up the fuse box and found another code. Both codes worked, so I used the one in the box. Finished the job in one minute. Works great. Thanks for all your help. Your AWESOME.
