No Sew Pumpkin {tutu}torial

Noelle doesn't need another skirt, but I was itching for a craft. I've seen adorable tulle skirts just about everywhere. I figured they couldn't be too hard to make, and I was right.
In this post I'll show you what I did to create a "pumpkin" tutu.

{Supplies}
4 yards of Orange tulle
1 yard of Green tulle
ribbon
scissors
tape measure
Sunflower (optional)
Total cost approx. $8 in supplies

First off you're going to need to measure your little princess's waist. I wrapped the green ribbon around Noelle then marked where the two ends came together with a marker and made knots at those spots. I left about 20 inches of ribbon on each side just in case I made an error, and for a bow.

Next, get those scissors warmed up. I work with one yard at a time, always cutting all the tulle I need for the project before moving on - because it sucks going back to cut more when you're half way done.
Lay the yard of fabric out on a flat surface,

and roll it up, three inches at a time.

then cut the roll into 3 to 4 inch strips. The strips will be the length of the fabric that you have. Now it's up to you to decide how short/long you want the tutu to be. The tulle here was 56 inches long, in order to use all the tulle I had, I cut each strip in half to make two 28 inch strips.

Repeat this for all of the orange tulle you are going to use for the skirt. For the green "leaves," I cut each strip three times: two 20 inch strips and one 16 inch strip. The short 16 inch strip was used to tie the leaves.
Now comes the fun! Weigh the ribbon down so it's easy to tie the tulle - I tied one side of the ribbon to the handle of a heavy saucepan and the other side of the ribbon was weighed down by my flour container as shown. You could also tie it around the back of a chair or around your legs.

Fold the tulle strip in half and bring the open-ended side of the fold under the ribbon,

Then bring it around and stick it through the loop on the other end.
Pull to create a slip-knot.

Repeat until you're out of orange tulle.
Then separate the orange tulle evenly so you can fit in 5 leaves (4 strips for each leaf).

I did 8 orange strips, then 4 green strips with one orange in the middle.

To make the leaves, gather the green tulle and tie it with a short strip.
You can keep the leaves long like the one on the left,

or cut them. I decided to cut them. I envisioned it like this so I wanted to go for it. I think it looks darling and definitely like a pumpkin.

When you're done you can add any embellishments you want. This sunflower was half off at JoAnn's for .99.

The best part - watching your little beauty twirl around in it!

Mr. G coaches water polo, so I made this one for Noelle to wear at home games. Go Tigers!

For this purple & gold skirt I used a stretchy head band instead of the ribbon and it didn't work as well. It stretched out about 5 inches and I had to keep adding tulle. Ribbon works much better.

Have fun creating and happy fall!

Princess Noelle

A beautiful Saturday afternoon stroll downtown

Complete with a giant banana split

I only had two measly scoops :)
Or not------------->

At an old ice cream parlor-slash-diner that hasn't changed since 1920, or at least since my Sophomore year in high school which was the last time I was there.

Two of my favorites: sushi and thrift stores.

Don't forget to check your local thrift store for Halloween costumes. I scored an awesome Lobster costume for Noah for 6 bucks! I found it on eBay going for $61. Noelle also picked up a Disney Cinderella dress in great condition for $5.

Noah, 7 Months

{SEVEN MONTHS}

Month six was a big one for my little Noah. He is 17 lbs, 28 inches long and has 2 bottom teeth (you can see one in this first picture. His new skills include scooting around the house on his bottom, pulling himself up in his crib, sleeping through the night, sitting without falling, blowing raspberries, doing what we call "dancing" when he's happy, and feeding himself puffs.

Noah really is the best baby I've ever been around. He rarely gets upset. Keep the kid fed, rested and occupied with a teething toy and he's completely content.

He loves:
Mommy, Daddy and Noelle
When Brinkley (our dog) runs around him
Making his way around the kitchen in his frog walker
Chewing on everything in site
Bath time
Being held
Tickles and kisses
Standing in his crib or anywhere else

                             "How you doin'?"

As I mentioned earlier, Noah scoots around the house. And he's quick!
It only took him a few seconds to get to the bacon.

Eating is going great for my little man. He nurses every 3 hours and gets a veggie or fruit with cereal combo for lunch and dinner. His favorite part of mealtime is chewing on the empty bowl, imagine that.

My favorite part of month 6 was the first 8 hours of consecutive sleep I've had since his birth. I can't even tell you. Before last week Noah has only slept through the night three times. He was in the routine of waking up and nursing at 3:30am and 5am, then awake at 7:30am. I was physically and mentally exhausted.

During a late night feeding last week, a loud rumble made me almost jump out of the glider. What on earth? I should have realized 7 months ago that I put Noah's crib against the wall opposite of the hot water heater. I was beyond frustrated with myself. The next day I rearranged Noah's furniture and that night he slept 12 HOURS STRAIGHT. That bloody hot water heater had been waking him up. This past week he has slept 8+ hours every night! Seriously could kick myself.

My happy boy.

Noah,
My sweet boy. You make every day so amazing. I love watching you grow and learn. You're almost crawling which excites and scares me. You are no longer the infant we brought home 7 months ago. You're expressive, fun, cuddly, and smart. Your eyes sparkle when I smile at you and my heart beams when you smile back.
Some of my favorite things about you:
The way you snuggle with me at night when you're wrapped in your blanket. You usually wait for me to rub your legs before you close your eyes.
How easy you are to please. Even a quick glance of eye contact makes you giggle.
Your crazy hair.
Your endless fascination with peek-a-boo.
How you've designated your blue silky camo blanket for day time and your white/blue blanket for night time.
I love you to the moon and back.

Gardner Grub - Polenta with Green Chiles and Corn

This Polenta dish does not disappoint. Serve it as the main dish for brunch or as a side with dinner. I've made it several times for company and my guests loved every bite. And I love making a dish for friends that they've never tried. For some reason most people I've served this to have never had polenta (or at least think they haven't). So give it a go, friends!

Sorry for the wonky picture. I forgot to take a shot of it out of the oven.

{Polenta with Green Chiles and Corn}

2 cups milk
1 cup water
3/4 cup polenta (cornmeal works just fine)
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp salt
pepper to taste
1/2 cup grated parmesan
7 oz can of whole green chiles (slice length wise or coarsely chop)
1 1/2 cup corn
2 cups shredded Monterey Jack Cheese (I usually use a blend)
1/2 cup whipping cream

Toppings:
sour cream
guacamole
salsa
cilantro

Make it
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and butter a 8x8x2 inch baking dish. Double the recipe for a 9x13. Don't use a tin foil pan, it doesn't work.

Mix milk, water, polenta (cornmeal), garlic and salt in a large saucepan. Bring to simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue until the polenta thickens. Add pepper and salt to taste. Stir in Parmesan Cheese.

Pour half of the polenta into the prepared dish. Cover with chiles, corn, and 1 cup of Monterey Jack Cheese. Drizzle with 1/4 cup of cream.

Spoon remaining polenta over and top with 1 cup of cheese. Pour the other 1/4 cup of cream over top.

Bake until polenta puffs and cheese browns, about 25 minutes.

Serve with Sour Cream, Guacamole, Cilantro, and Salsa on the side. This is a must!

Bon Appetito!
